In one of my last blogs I discussed the phenomenon that was and Is Gossip Girl. I promised that I was going to go in depth about the fashion in a follow-up post. 

I sat down with Maria Ayers for an exclusive interview about Gossip Girl fashion. Maria has a TikTok page @guccimood where she talks about Gossip Girl and gives you advice on the fashion and lifestyle surrounding the show. With over 45k followers, Maria’s audience truly trusts her views on the importance of GG fashion. I emailed her a few questions and will be sharing her answers with you. 

Sadie: Thank you Maria for sitting down and talking exclusively with TTB! How did you get introduced to the world of GG?

Maria: “It all started when I read the books at a very young age. I immediately fell in love with the world of chaos and luxury. The first book opens up with Blair’s POV and I have connected with her character ever since.”

Sadie: I can totally relate with reading the books. They are so fun and give you a whole different view on the Gossip girl world. I was 9 when I first watched the show. Probably a little too young LOL. One of Blair’s inspirations is Audrey’s Hepburn’s character, Holly Golightly, from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Other than Blair, who are your inspirations, both lifestyle and fashion-wise?

Maria:  “Audrey Hepburn, Chanel Oberlin, Audrey Hope, and Cher Horowitz.”

Sadie: Cher Horowitz from Clueless will always be my fashion icon as well. Speaking of Audrey Hope from the new GG, what do you think of the new GG reboot from a fashion perspective, and overall? 

Maria: “I think they are trying to modernize it a lot. The only reboot style I love is Audrey and Monet’s. I love classic preppy looks and I wish they did more of it.”

Sadie: In the original GG there were some timeless pieces but also pieces that have since gone out of style. So I can definitely see how they are trying to modernize it. Going back to the original, how would you describe Blair, Serena and Georgina’s style?

Maria explains that Blair is more “classic, preppy, and extravagant. Serena – Boho, chic, and center of attention. Georgina – Dark, edgy, and cool.”

Sadie: If you could go shopping with any one of the girls from GG who would it be and why? 

Maria: “Blair, obvi! My style icon, and I could trust her to be brutally honest.”

Sadie: Yes! Blair’s style is everything! I think for me I would love to go with either Serena or Blair because I feel like I have similarities to both of their styles in my own! In GG, what would be each girl’s staple pieces that they need to have in their wardrobe at all times?

Maria: “Blair: Headband! Serena: Sequins. Georgina: Statement necklace or earrings and Jenny: Leather jacket.” 

Sadie: I need their staples in my wardrobe ASAP! When I was 9, for my Youtube channel I did a Serena inspired lookbook with a striped blazer, turquoise leggings, sequin top, and Converse. In what world would she wear that?? Haha. I obviously didn’t quite understand. How do you think each one of their styles represents them as a person? 

Maria: “Blair: Her style shows she is in control and in charge. Serena: Her style reflects how much she loves attention, and how careless she can be. Georgina: Her style shows her dark ways. Jenny: Her style switch represented her personality switch.”

Sadie: Do you think the original Gossip Girl was a cultural reset, and if so, why? 

Maria: “It truly was a cultural reset, the world of Gossip Girl changed fashion and pop culture. Years later, the style and show is still referenced and copied. We all strive to be a Blair or a Serena.”

Sadie: Do you think that without the high end fashion Gossip Girl would have been as successful? 

Maria: “I think it would have been less successful. We all dream of the expensive couture and craved the luxury lives they were living- that is what made Gossip Girl so special.”

Sadie: Lastly, I can see that you love the fashion world and have noticed that you offer styling opportunities for many different budgets and lifestyles! Tell us more about your Blair Waldorf GG-inspired stylings. How did you get into styling? And how did your TikTok and content influence your creative idea to offer GG-inspired stylings? 

Maria: “I love to offer services to anyone who is struggling to revamp their closet or needs assistance for a specific upcoming event. I have always had my nose in Vogue and I studied fashion in college so I felt I had the skills and passion to create someone’s dream closet.

“TikTok really helped me launch my styling services because it is what made me realize that so many people were interested in my style. So many people are drawn to my styling because they are GG fashion fans themselves and know I can get the job done right.”
