The Phenomenon of Gossip Girl – Then and Now
Gossip Girl here, your one and only source into the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite... And who am I? That's one secret I'll never tell. You know you love me. XOXO, GG” In honour of the New Gossip girl reboot on HBO Max and Crave (if you’re Canadian like me), I wanted to bring awareness to the cultural reset that was and is Gossip Girl. In this blog I will not be sharing the fashion in Gossip Girl due to the fact I will soon be doing a whole separate blog dedicated to that. I am currently writing this blog while listening to the GG soundtrack to get some inspo about the 2007 major hit that is/was “Gossip Girl.”

5 Movies You Probably Haven’t Seen but NEED TO

I am so excited for today’s blog post! I will be talking about five movies that you probably haven’t seen but need to ASAP. You know when a movie just sticks with you after you watch it ? These movies do that for me. Stay tuned for the end of the blog where I will be giving away one AppleTV/iTunes gift card so YOU can watch these movies! All giveaway rules will be posted at the end of this post and on my TTB instagram. I love to type while I listen to music, so as I’m writing this blog I am listening to the 13 Going on 30 soundtrack (one of my movie picks down below!) Enjoy!

Almost Famous

I’m starting off strong with this first movie pick — Almost Famous. My parents have been waiting for years for me to be ready to watch this movie. I finally sat down and watched it and… it was so great. This movie (without giving away the ending) is about William, a 15-year-old boy who gets an opportunity to write an article about a rock band for Rolling Stone magazine. This movie takes place in 1973 (and was based on the life of the movie’s director), but was filmed in 2000. William leaves home and follows this rock band along with them on tour, all while gathering information to write his story and learning lots of life lessons along the way.

This movie stars Patrick Fugit, Kate Hudson (from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days), Zooey Deschanel (from New Girl and ELF) Billy Crudup, and Jason Lee (Dave Seville from Alvin and the Chipmunks).

The cast! The acting! The story! So, so good. There is a scene in this movie where they all sing Tiny Dancer by Elton John. It’s so magical.

My parents went to the TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) premiere of this movie in 2000 when some random couple on the street didn’t want to go anymore, so they got these movie tickets for free. So spontaneous. Since then, my Mom always wanted me to see this movie. It stuck with her for more than 20 years. Now it’s one of my favorites.

Don’t watch the trailer though — it gives too much away.

RV

This has to be one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. It stars the late Robin Williams, JoJo, Josh Hutcherson, Cheryl Hines, and Kristin Chenoweth. Also Mathew Gray Gubler (Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds) has a small role. This movie is so funny. I first watched it when I was six and it still makes me laugh.

The story is about a family that wants to go on vacation and decides to go on a road trip by RV. What they don’t know is that their Dad has to write a work presentation and go to an important meeting while they’re travelling, and he has to hide it from his family. They struggle with the RV, and meet some interesting people along the way.

There are so many funny scenes! One of my favorites is where the family is all on the RV singing different songs, and it bugs the father. The chaotic singing from each family member, and the acting Robin Williams does makes this movie so good. I memorized the whole singing sequence and when I am on a roadtrip with my family I sing it. We all know it by heart.

The Truman Show

This whole movie really makes you think. I had a split second while I watched this movie where I was skeptical about my life. I’ll tell you why.

Filmed before the start of social media, this movie stars Jim Carrey as Truman. His whole life is filmed without him knowing — his family, friends and interactions are all staged and he doesn’t know. He has been living his life inside “The Truman Show” since birth and his entire world is a TV set. Blows my mind. It’s not a reality show like the ones we know now because reality stars know they’ve signed up for cameras following their life. Truman’s life is livestreamed 24/7. So that they don’t need to have commercial breaks the “cast” (his “family”) promotes products. Everyone in the world is in on this show except for him. So what happens when he discovers the truth?

So many perspectives in this movie. Incredible. Makes you think about how we are kinda living in the Truman Show in 2021 with all the social media and access to cameras every minute.

Accepted

This is a comedy movie with a deep side. I recently just watched this movie and it is now one of my absolute favorites. This movie stars a wide range of comedic actors and actresses — Justin Long, Blake Lively, Jonah Hill, and more.

The whole plot is incredible. When a bunch of highschool kids don’t get accepted into the college of their choosing, they still want to make their families proud of them and decide to set up their own school, The South Harmon Institute of Technology, or S.H.I.T. LOL. The whole movie is about friendship, finding your unique gifts and talents, and challenging the norms of the traditional school curriculum. I think most teenagers can agree the school system needs work — teaching things that are important and building us up instead of making us feel less than.

I really related to this movie because for so many years I felt like some of my teachers in school, from elementary school up until middle school, didn’t really believe in me. I had a few good teachers but for the most part they didn’t really see my full potential, which made me have limiting self beliefs. When I got to highschool I felt as though my teachers actually built us up and wanted us to succeed. I remember in early elementary school, one of my teachers was so hard on me. I handed in my math work and she would make this face of disgust. After that I had this belief that I wasn’t good at math and couldn’t do it, which is not true. Because I am a creative, some of these teachers didn’t see my potential to fit the norms of the school system. This was also a blessing in disguise because now I always work hard in my school work. Anyway, I can really understand the depth of this movie from personal experience.

The speech at the end of the movie has so much wisdom in it. You will see. 10/10.

13 Going on 30

One of the reasons I have a blog is because of this movie. This movie shaped me. It stars Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo. When Jennifer Garner’s character, Jenna Rink, finds herself making a wish to be 30 on her 13th birthday, she time travels to the future. Physically she’s 30 but mentally she’s still 13. The casting of this movie is amazing. The 13-year-old younger versions of the characters are so well cast — they look so much alike. You will see what I mean when you watch.

Jenna’s 30-year-old self lives in New York and works at a fashion magazine. I mean that’s literally my dream!!! There is a scene where Jenna is in her office and she takes out her file folder and makes edits to her magazine. I have a photo of this scene on my inspo board on Pinterest. Because of this scene, when I was a kid I went to the office store and bought a black and white patterned folder, clear paper holders, and a bunch of teen fashion magazines. I used to print out different patterns from Google and put them into those clear folders and make “edits on them” for the “ magazine company.” When I was 7 I thought I was a magazine editor, interior designer, and fashion designer. I would also tear off magazine covers, write on them, and mail them to myself. Jenna always received mail from different magazine companies and I thought mail was the coolest, so I did the same. My dream of working for a magazine developed because of this movie.
