When I first heard about the launch of Sid’s Room, I was immediately excited. Not only for my friends behind this project but also for what this show will bring to the Toronto music scene. Inspired by the intimate live music environment of Tiny Desk and the authentic live feeling of KEXP, Sid’s Room is an amazing platform for up-and-coming Toronto-based musicians and bands. Located in a (pretty big) basement bedroom in downtown Toronto, this is by far the coolest “venue” and music space I’ve ever been to.
I had the privilege of watching two live tapings in action and was blown away by the production and professionalism of the crew, the majority of whom are students of Toronto Metropolitan University. Their media production skillset is truly remarkable for those in their late teens and early twenties. Watching them in action, you can tell that their future is exceptionally bright. I was genuinely impressed by all the dedication and work they put in behind the camera so that the focus and heart of the show can be the music itself.
Someone yells, “The band is pulling up in 15 minutes!” It’s a line that feels like it could come straight out of a coming-of-age indie movie.
In preparation for the band’s arrival, a team huddle takes place. The crew lays out how they will set up the cameras and audio, who will help bring in equipment with the artist, and plans the questions for the interview portion of the show. Everyone on the team has a role to play, and they are all very focused.
As this is a Gen Z-led show, between takes I hear comments like, “I don’t wanna bother him; he’s locked in,” and other phrases only Gen Zs would say, like “We’re lowkey goated” and “ATE DOWN!”—adding to the inviting, youth-filled energy of Sid’s Room. The set environment feels so healthy and supportive of everyone’s individual roles.
Minutes later, when the show is over, the friendship in the room and the feeling of accomplishment are overwhelming. The thing that is so cool about Sid’s Room is that everyone involved is truly passionate about the music. The production crew hand-selects each band that performs, and audiences are exposed to many different, new bands and artists based in the Toronto area.
After watching the production of Sid’s Room, I left feeling inspired and truly excited for where this will go!!
